COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course emphasizes providing meaningful accommodations to students with disabilities in an education setting including: legal mandates and regulations, characteristics and educational needs of students with disabilities and instructional techniques that can be used with these students.

The goal of this course is to help develop a better understanding of the topic and produce tangible resources to help implement plans, strategies, and ideas at your school. In addition to lecture videos, possible resource links, and assessments, you will be able to utilize the Journal and Learning Activities. Take advantage of a method that best works for you. For example, these assignments can be completed in print form on legal pad, in a spiral bound notebook, or in an actual journal. You may also complete the Journal and Learning Activities in digital form, with a word processor of your choice, as a way to have useful materials to use after successful completion of the class.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Trace the history of educating individuals with disabilities and changing attitudes toward students with disabilities
  • Describe governmental policies and regulations and court decisions affecting education for individuals with disabilities, with special emphasis given to an in-depth analysis of the implications and implementation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act and other legal mandates
  • Discuss a variety of instructional techniques, strategies, and content modifications frequently used with students who have disabilities
  • Develop and discuss professional behavior and ethical practices
